HISTORY
Artful
Truth began in the fall of 1998 when The Wolfsonian-Florida International
University was invited by the Florida Tobacco Pilot Program to
design a learning unit to increase students' awareness of visual
culture. We discovered that by strengthening students' ability
to interpret visual culture they were less susceptible to be manipulated
by persuasive visual images-tobacco advertisements chief among
them. During the 1998-99 school year, Artful Truth funded projects
in 106 public schools, after-school and community programs, and
museums throughout the state; the following year the program focused
on 49 such institutions. For 2000-2001, 30 grants were awarded
to select Florida educators who had previously participated in
the program.
